When you’re trying to lose weight, sometimes you may be tempted to not eat anything at all. But starving yourself is not the right way to shed some pounds and it’s also very detrimental to your health. While you may think that food is the enemy when it comes to dieting, that’s not really true. Some diet foods and diet food supplements are in fact very helpful when you’re trying to shape up.

Here are some examples of diet foods

  1. Leafy greens. These include spinach, kale, Swiss chards, and collards. They’re ideal for weight loss diets because they’re low in calories, low in carbohydrates, and high in fiber. If you want to increase the volume of your meals, eating leafy greens is the way to go because they don’t overload your body with the calories that can turn into excess fat. They’re also full of vitamins and minerals as well as antioxidants.
  2. Whole eggs. More recent studies have shown that whole eggs do not have a negative impact on your blood cholesterol. They also don’t cause heart attacks. But they are one of the best things you can eat when you’re on a diet. Several studies have shown that eating eggs for breakfast (instead of bagels) can make you feel more sated and you can lose weight because you eat less later on in the day.

Whole eggs don’t have a lot of calories, but they offer just about every nutrient your body needs.

  1. Cruciferous veggies. These are your Brussels sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower. Just like most vegetables, they’re very filling, low in calories and high in fiber. They are also rich in protein compared to other vegetables too, although they don’t quite match the protein you get from animal sources. They even help fight off cancer.
  2. Oily fish. This particular fish is also low calorie and is loaded with lots of essential nutrients, including high quality protein and healthy fats. It also provides you with a considerable amount of iodine to keep your thyroid functioning normally, for a healthy metabolism. You also get Omega-3 fatty acids which reduce inflammation and help fight metabolic disease and obesity.

Salmon is your best oily fish option. But you can also try herring, sardines, trout, and mackerel.

  1. Chicken breast and lean beef. Processed meat is undoubtedly unhealthy, but if you can get unprocessed red meat, you’re good to go. This type of meat is rich in protein and a protein-rich diet allows you to burn off up to 100 calories a day.

By adding more protein in your diet, you can really increase your chances of succeeding with your weight loss program. Just boost your protein consumption by 25 to 30 percent. You’ll reduce your cravings by 60%, cut your desire for midnight snacks by 50%, and add a loss of 1 pound every week.

  1. This is another low-calorie food, which is of course crucial if you’re trying to lose weight. It doesn’t have a lot of fat either. It can also provide you with lots of protein as long as you get the tuna canned in water (but not in oil).
  2. Boiled potatoes. A potato contains many nutrients. Potatoes may in fact be one of the most complete meals you can get. They’re especially high in potassium, which you absolutely need if you want to control your blood pressure.

White boiled potatoes can make you feel full as they’re the most filling foods around. So you don’t have to eat a lot of potatoes to feel full, and you’ll eat less of the other foods as a result. Also, you should let your potatoes cool after you boil them. This will let them form resistant starch that also helps with weight loss (among other benefits).

  1. Legumes and beans. Eat kidney beans, black beans, and lentils. They’re high in fiber and protein, which make you feel full.
  2. Unlike other fruits, avocados aren’t loaded with carbs. They’re full of healthy fats, and they’re especially laden with monounsaturated oleic acid, which is the same type of fat you get from olive oil. Add avocados to your salad, and you even boost the nutrient intake you get from your vegetables.
